In our series ‘People of Pauwels Consulting’, our colleagues introduce themselves and talk about how they experience working at Pauwels Consulting and with our clients.
Today, we are going to get acquainted with Karl Demol, Junior Project Leader at Pauwels Consulting.
Karl: Certainly! I’m Karl Demol, 23 years old and I was born and raised in Tervuren. I currently live in Schaerbeek.
Karl: In my spare time, I like to play football, go for a run or work out at the gym. I also like going out with friends.
Karl: I graduated in Industrial Engineering from Group T in Leuven, and I also completed a Master in Management at KU Leuven.
Karl: I followed Sciences and Mathematics in high school so I wanted to continue in that direction. That’s why I chose Industrial Engineering.
The program offered me a perfect balance between theory and practice. It’s not a purely theoretical field of study. I like that.
I also wanted a basic knowledge of economics, accounting, management and marketing. Those topics were not really dealt with during my previous training. So I decided to follow the Master in Management as well.
Karl: At the moment, I’m a Junior Project Leader at Elia thanks to Pauwels Consulting. It’s my first professional work experience, actually.
Karl: During my last months as a student, I was already looking for my first job. I found the Pauwels Consulting website through Google.
Pauwels Consulting had posted some interesting jobs online, so I decided to submit my resume. During a first meeting with the recruiters we discussed my options, needs and wishes. And just a few weeks later, I started working as a consultant for Elia.
Karl: My first impression of Pauwels Consulting was very positive: a young, fast growing company that gives a lot of confidence to the people they recruit.
Karl: Yes, it did. Pauwels Consulting kept contacting me until they found the right job. That’s how I got my project at Elia. As a company, they continually strive for innovation as well.
Karl: Sure! As Junior Project Manager at Elia, my main task is to lead projects for the construction of underground high-voltage power lines.
Our goal is to ensure that the high-voltage power lines will be operational on time within the proposed budget and that they can be employed in accordance with the ruling regulations.
Karl: My responsibilities are quite diverse, actually. I make plans and determine budgets, I select contractors and study partners, I get in touch with all stakeholders and keep them informed and I organize meetings.
Karl: This kind of project usually takes two to three years, depending on the length of the power line and the complexity of the project.
Karl: Every project is different, so there is a lot of variation. I also get in touch with many and very different people. That’s quite interesting as well. For a Junior, I also get a lot of responsibility, which is really nice.
Karl: Planning is very important because you are simultaneously working on different projects.
In general, I learn a lot of things that will be useful for future projects. The expertise I’m gaining at the moment – by taking the lead on projects at Elia – will be incredibly valuable in the future.
Karl: I would like to be manager of a team of project managers one day, preferably a function with a strong focus on management skills.
Karl: Certainly! I really like this quote, for example:
If no one thinks you can, then you have to.
